Post-doc Fellowships

ONE-YEAR POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP – 2024-25

The Haifa Center for Mediterranean History (HCMH) seeks applications for postdoctoral fellowships for the academic year 2024-25, with an option for an extension for a further year into 2025-2026. Founded in 2016, HCMH aims to promote the historical study of the Mediterranean in the University of Haifa within broad geographical, chronological and theoretical frameworks. We are looking for candidates who can bring an innovative and exciting approach to link between the long-term history of the Mediterranean and contemporary challenges. For example, but not limited to, the study of the history of climate change, natural hazards, migration, epidemics, social/religious tensions and food security. We encourage applications from candidates working in all related historical fields. Candidates should demonstrate academic excellence in their respective fields of expertise.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. by the beginning of the fellowship tenure period, and be no more than five years after its completion. We expect the successful candidate to devote his/her time to research, be present on the Haifa campus and take an active role in the academic life of HCMH: attend all seminars and lectures, present their research in various forums, meet informally with advanced students, etc. In addition, the fellow will be asked to organize a conference (to be funded by HCMH) on the implications of historical research of the Mediterranean to contemporary challenges, either focusing on one or several themes according to her/his research interests.

The fellowship offers an annual stipend of $25,000, for one year. It is advisable but not obligatory to obtain the sponsorship of a faculty member in the University of Haifa, with whom the candidate wishes to collaborate.
If interested and the opportunity arises, fellows may be allowed to teach at the University of Haifa (up to 2 weekly hours), as long as their research work is not impeded. Teaching is compensated separately by the relevant departments and is taxable.
Please submit a dossier including:

  • Statement of research plan (2 pages, excluding bibliography)
  • Proposed program for an international conference (1 page, list of potential invited speakers is optional but not mandatory)
  • Dissertation abstract (1 page)
  • Statement of support from Haifa faculty member (if available)
  • Writing sample (up to 8,000 words)
  • Curriculum vitae, including list of publications
  • Two references (emailed directly by referees)

Application materials in PDF should be emailed to Ms. Ornit Tsoury, HCMH administrator, at hcmh@univ.haifa.ac.il by April 30th 2024. Results may be expected during the following month.
