Dr. Umberto Signori will give a talk at the "Venise, puissance régionale méditerranéenne" conference in Nice, France

Dr. Umberto Signori, HCMH research fellow, will be giving a talk titled “Beyond the Stato da Mar. Protected people in the early modern Eastern Mediterranean (1670-1715)”  at the “Venise, puissance régionale méditerranéenne” conference. The conference’s theme this year would be Perspectives économiques, maritimes et politiques 1669-1797.

This presentation aims to investigate the politics of human protection that characterized the Venetian strategy in the Eastern Mediterranean from the post-Candia war until the beginning of the second war for Morea’s possession. The analysis demonstrates that the creation of bonds of protection outside the Dominion da Mar was not defined only by market relations but rather a complex interplay between such protection policy and the politics of domination.

Umberto’s talk will take place on Saturday, November 20th at 11:25 (France local time).
