I am a historian of the Middle Ages, working on urban development in the Mediterranean between the 11th and 13th centuries and in the history of the Latin East. My research focuses on the reciprocal connections between socio-economic structures and changes in the cityscape, as well as environmental factors which shaped the urban fabric of medieval cities. My publications deal with the urban development of Jerusalem in the twelfth century, urban conflicts in the cities of the Latin East, and the connection between changes in the urban landscape of eleventh century Rome and the Medieval Climate Anomaly. In my current project, I explore the role of urban imagery that was interlaced in medieval texts ranging from chronicles and pilgrimage accounts to encyclopedic compilations.
