Mr. Tomer Elad 2022-2025

Tomer Elad is a PhD candidate in the Department of General History at the University of Haifa. The research he began aims to explore how captains, navigators and masters in the British Navy treated the practice of navigation at sea. The questions that interest Tomer are related to the degree of understanding, trust and certainty that those who navigated had in relation to the variety of methods, tools and practices that were at their disposal when they needed to find their position and to plan a sailing route in the open sea. His research is particularly focused on exploration journeys to the south Pacific Ocean in the second half of the 18th century, in comparison with routine voyages to the Mediterranean Sea.
