המרכז לחקר ההיסטוריה של הים התיכון (HCMH) מציע מלגת דוקטורט לשלוש/ארבע שנים במסגרת פרויקט המחקר “Learned Travel and Antiquarianism in the Early Modern Levant” בראשותו של ד”ר צור שלו. המלגה תוענק החל מאוקטובר 2021 או מאוחר יותר בהתאם למועד קליטת הדוקטורנט/ית. צירוף להנחיה של אנשי/נשות סגל מחוגים אחרים בפקולטה למדעי הרוח בחיפה ישקל בהתאם לאופי המחקר המוצע.
בעת החדשה המוקדמת הנוכחות האירופית בלבנט התעצמה והתגוונה. העולם הים תיכוני עדיין היה מוקד עניין משמעותי עבור מלומדי אירופה ואף הווה זירה פעילה של חילופי ידע. אירופאים הגיעו ללבנט כדי להכיר את המנהגים המקומיים, ללמוד את עולם הטבע ולתעד עתיקות, פעמים רבות במשולב עם צליינות מסורתית. ההתעניינות בלבנט ובתרבויותיו ההיסטוריות והעכשוויות התעוררה גם בשל התפתחויות בעולם הלמדנות האירופי, בו חקר השפות והטקסטים של עמי האזור קיבל תנופה מחודשת על רקע הפולמוס הדתי מבית. אנו מזמינים מועמדים/ות להציע פרויקט מחקר במסגרת התחום הרחב והעשיר במקורות.
על המועמדים/ות להגיש הצהרה אישית אשר תכלול תיאור קצר של המחקר המוצע, קורות חיים אשר מדגישים קורסים ונסיון מחקרי רלוונטי, תעודות של תואר ראשון ושני, דוגמת כתיבה (עד 5,000 מלים – ניתן להגיש פרק מתוך התזה), ומכתב המלצה אחד.
תוכנית הדוקטורט והמחקר יתבצעו באנגלית או בעברית, באופן עצמאי, אך תוך זיקה לנושא המחקר הרחב. נעודד את המועמד/ת הנבחר/ת להגיש מועמדות למלגה המוסדית. בין אם תתקבל מלגה מוסדית ובין אם לאו, תתקבל מלגה בגובה 60,000 ₪ בשנה. במידת הצורך, תישקל האפשרות להאריך לשנה רביעית.
חשוב לציין כי זוהי מלגה תחרותית, שתאושר על-ידי הוועדה האקדמית הישראלית והבינ”ל של המרכז לחקר ההיסטוריה של הים התיכון. קבלת המלגה מותנית במעמד אקדמי ומנהלי תקין, בהתאם להנחיות של המל”ג. חידוש המלגה יישקל כל שנה בהתאם לדיווח של הסטודנט/ית ולמשוב של המנחה.

Learned Travel and Antiquarianism in the Early Modern Levant
The Haifa Center for Mediterranean History (HCMH) is offering a three/four-year PhD scholarship on the subject Learned Travel and Antiquarianism in the Early Modern Levant, to be supervised by Dr. Zur Shalev. The scholarship should begin in October 2021, or as soon thereafter as possible. Faculty members from other departments in Humanities may be added to the doctoral committee, depending on the particular topic.
European presence in the Levant significantly increased and diversified during the early modern period. The Mediterranean world still firmly held its attraction for the European scholarly community, and moreover, was seen as an active arena of scientific exchange. Europeans arrived in the Levant not only to venerate the sacred sites, but also to appreciate local customs, study nature, and document antiquities, often in conjunction with traditional pilgrimage. Interest in the Levant and its historical and contemporary cultures increased thanks also to developments in European scholarship, which, spurred by religious debate, now emphasized the study of Oriental languages and texts. We invite candidates to pursue their project within the parameters of this large, richly documented field.
Applicants should supply a personal statement which would include a brief description of the envisioned project, a CV highlighting relevant courses and experience, BA and MA transcripts and diplomas, a writing sample (up to 5,000 words – a chapter from the MA thesis is possible), and a single letter of recommendation.
The PhD program and research will be conducted independently in English or in Hebrew, and will become a part of a wider HCMH research focus on Learned Travel and Antiquarianism in the Early Modern Levant. Successful candidates will be expected to apply for the institutional PhD scholarship. Whether successful in the institutional bid or not, they will be entitled to a stipend of 60,000 NIS per year for three years. A fourth year will be considered if necessary.
Please note that this is a competitive scholarship. The HCMH’s Israeli and international academic committees will evaluate all applications. The awarding of the scholarship is pending on academic and administrative good standing, according to the regulations of the Graduate Studies Authority. Renewal of the scholarship will be reviewed each year according to the student’s report and the supervisors’ evaluation.

The Haifa Center for Mediterranean History (HCMH) is offering a three/four-year PhD scholarship on its research cluster – FIRST ENCOUNTERS: The Ancient Mediterranean Sea as a cultural bridge and barrier under the directorship of Dr. David Friesem and Dr. Gil Gambash. The scholarship should begin in October 2021, or as soon thereafter as possible.
The PhD project will be dedicated to the historical role of the sea in facilitating new cultural connections and exchange between unacquainted ancient societies across the Mediterranean basin, and to the ways in which these societies interacted with unfamiliar ideas and came to conceptualize ‘the other’, be it religious, technological, culinary, intellectual, et cetera in nature.

The successful applicant will develop a research plan dedicated to the topic of first encounters over the Mediterranean during antiquity, focusing on a theme, period, and case-studies of her/his choice, and employing methodologies and corpora of sources relevant for the specific research questions produced. Suitable candidates may likely come from an anthropologically-oriented disciplinary spectrum ranging from the historical to the archaeological.

PhD “Sandwich program” Scholarship, sponsored by HCMH
The Haifa Center for Mediterranean History (HCMH) is happy to sponsor the Council for Higher Education in Israel PhD “Sandwich program” applicants. If you are studying any aspect of Mediterranean history and would like to develop your work at HCMH starting spring 2021 for one or two semesters, please send your brief CV and a 1-page research plan to Ms. Shiri Barnhart at hcmh@univ.haifa.ac.il by 10 December 2020.
Application deadline: 31 December, 2020.
Please make sure you are eligible to apply according to the following criteria:
A. The student is enrolled in a doctoral degree program at an accredited institution of higher education overseas. The program will be open to students from all countries.
B. The student has completed their first year of doctoral studies successfully.
C. The student is not a citizen or a resident of Israel.

HCMH, which began its work in 2017, promotes the historical study of the pre-modern Mediterranean at the University of Haifa, and aims to connect it to the vibrant international networks of Mediterranean research.
Prospective PhD projects will engage meaningfully in a Mediterranean theme, and show relevance to the current historiographical discourse. They will be supervised by a Haifa researcher from one of the following departments: History, Maritime Civilizations, Archaeology, Art History, Middle Eastern History, Israel Studies, and Jewish History. Co-advisors from other departments and universities are welcome.
Applicants should supply a personal statement, BA and MA transcripts and diplomas, a writing sample (up to 5,000 words – a chapter from the MA thesis is possible), a single letter of recommendation, and a statement from a Haifa researcher agreeing to supervise the dissertation.
At the time of application, applicants do not have to supply an official indication that they have been accepted to the PhD program of one of the above-mentioned departments, but successful applicants will be eligible for HCMH funds only upon formal acceptance to their indicated PhD program.

The Haifa Center for Mediterranean History (HCMH) is offering a three-year PhD scholarship for a project relating to the pre-modern history of the Mediterranean, starting in October 2018.
HCMH, which began its work in 2017, promotes the historical study of the pre-modern Mediterranean at the University of Haifa, and aims to connect it to the vibrant international networks of Mediterranean research.
Prospective PhD projects will engage meaningfully in a Mediterranean theme, and show relevance to the current historiographical discourse. They will be supervised by a Haifa researcher from one of the following departments: History, Maritime Civilizations, Archaeology, Art History, Middle Eastern History, Israel Studies, and Jewish History. Co-advisors from other departments and universities are welcome.
The scholarship will be offered to students who will be admitted to doctoral studies at the University of Haifa.
Applicants should supply a personal statement, BA and MA transcripts and diplomas, a writing sample (up to 8,000 words – a chapter from the MA thesis is possible), and two letters of recommendation – one from the designated PhD supervisor, and another from a senior researcher familiar with the candidate. In addition, applicants should supply an official letter indicating that they had been accepted to the PhD program of one of the above-mentioned departments, accompanied by the approved statement of intent for the dissertation.
Successful candidates will be expected to apply also for the institutional PhD scholarship of distinction.
The stipend will ultimately amount to 15,000$ annually.
